If more than 50% of your employees (when surveyed) say they are “not entrepreneurial”, you have a serious competitive [DIS]advantage brewing.

– Joe Abraham, Head of Entrepreneurship Programming, LEADYNE

It used to be that entrepreneurism was a bad word in companies around the world. Executives were expected to display entrepreneurial traits like future focus, idea generation, persistence and risk acceptance. However, those below the senior ranks were discouraged from showing those traits for a variety of cultural and political reasons.

That mindset is failing quickly in today’s marketplace. 3 marketplace trends are forcing senior executives to rethink their perspective on entrepreneurial behavior in their organizations.

Trend 1: The fierce competitive landscape is forcing agile thinking across all levels of a company, not just the C-suite. That calls for an “activation” of skills most employees need to learn.

Trend 2: Gallup reports that 64% of employees are either not engaged* or actively disengaged. This has a significant impact on the output companies are receiving despite significant investments into traditional training and development.

Trend 3: Research has found that entrepreneurial capacity lies dormant in employees until it is activated through specific measures and initiatives. Most companies do not have the in-house expertise or objectivity to identify hindrances to innovation or activate the needed behaviors in the employee base.

* According to the Gallup report,  53% of employees identified as “not engaged” may be generally satisfied, but not cognitively or emotionally connected to their work and workplace. They will usually show up to work and do the minimum required but will quickly leave their company for a slightly better offer.
